When we think of general dentistry, we usually think of it sort of like a chore, something we have to take care of once or twice a year, for ourselves and our families. We often roll our eyes and groan, forcing ourselves to go through the motions of going to the dentist and just “getting it done.”
When we are reminded of dentistry, we think of dental health, first and foremost, i.e. the health of our mouth, teeth, and gums. But what about the improvements to our quality of life that we can get from participating in general dentistry? This might be something a little harder to put our finger on but bear with us. We often look at dental visits as something we have to do, but rather we should look at these visits as something we want to do.
A Healthy Life Equals a Higher Quality of Living
As our mothers always said to us, we should take the time and effort to take good care of our bodies. From learning how to bathe ourselves, to eating right, to sleeping well, to exercising, to learning to wash our hands and brush our teeth, proper health has been instilled in us since childhood.
And these aren’t just chores or things that we have to do. Think about how good it feels to step out of a warm shower right before bed. How about how fulfilled we feel when we eat a good meal? Or how energized we get after a good night’s rest? Or how about the great state of mind that comes from an hour of exercise?
The one thing that all of these activities and habits have in common is that they improve the quality of our lives. We feel better when we do them, as they are the healthy thing to do. Not only are such activities simply the right thing to do physically, but they are mentally and psychologically rewarding for us as well.
Imagine a life with little sleep, no exercise, no dental hygiene, very little bathing, and poor food. What kind of quality of life would such a person have? Not a very good one clearly. What we can tell from this is that being healthy and maintaining healthy daily habits actually creates a better living condition. So if that’s true, then wouldn’t making scheduled, regular visits to the dentist for you and your family be conducive to a better quality of life as well?
Scheduled Visits to the Dentist are the Healthy Thing to Do
No one wants to get cavities or suffer from periodontitis or any of the many other dental ailments and conditions. Occurrences like these reduce one’s quality of life considerably. And even if it’s not happening to you directly, no parent wants to have to go through the process of taking care of a child who has a cavity or a significant dental ailment due to a lack of dental attention.
But these conditions are what happens when we don’t see the dentist twice a year. Going to the dentist might still seem like a chore, but we should take heart in a clean bill of health for our teeth, mouths, and gums as being something that is not only great to hear our dentist award us with, but which also just makes our lives better.
Going to the dentist is the healthy thing to do, for our bodies, even if it seems like an uncomfortable, unpleasant trip. But we should be inspired to take good care of our health and the health of our loved ones, and good oral care is a big part of that. A considerable benefit to regular visits to the family dentist is the preventative health benefit of general dentistry, i.e. taking good care of your dental health to prevent adverse conditions from setting in.
If part of a good quality of life comes from not experiencing dental ailments and going to the dentist is a big part of preventing those ailments from setting in, wouldn’t it make sense then that going to the dentist is directly supportive of a better quality of life?
